Performance automotive enthusiasts have long recognized the horsepower advantage offered by iridium spark plugs. Dating as far back as 2001, the performance has been documented and dyno'd in magazines such as Muscle Mustangs, Fast Fords and Import Tuner. Denso's iridium spark plug line has long dominated the iridium spark plugs aftermarket. Until now, they had been unavailable to the PT Cruiser, Neon and SRT-4 market, due to the unique head and OE wire construction of the 2.4 liter turbo and non-turbo engines. Now Sparkplugs.com has designed a socket and wire set specifically for the PT Cruiser and SRT-4, so they too can take advantage of the increased performance available from iridium spark plugs. Why You Can't Use Just Any Sparkplug Except for the overall height, the Denso iridium part number ITV16 is similar to both the Champion RE14MCC-5 and its platinum equivalent, the RE14PLP5. However, there are two obstacles to using non-factory plugs in the Chrysler PT Cruiser, Dodge Neon, and SRT-4. 1. Overall Height The overall height of the Champion plug is 7mm taller than a standard plug, which prevents other plugs, like the Denso iridium plug, from properly mating with the terminal connector on the stock spark plug wires. 2. Extended Hex Head In addition, the 5/8" hex head on the plug that allows for removal and replacement is 6mm higher on the Champion plug than on traditional plugs. Therefore, the hex head portion of the Denso ITV16 would disappear into the engine head as you were tightening the plug - before the plug was properly tightened, which could cause engine damage. The Sparkplugs.com Solution Sparkplugs.com now offers a solution that will enable you to run a Denso iridium plug in your Chrysler PT Cruiser or Dodge Neon.
Premium wire construction features include hi-temp silicone outer jacket and inner silicone core, textile braid for cable strength, a wire wound ferro-magnetic core for high voltage transmission and reliable suppression. 2. Extended Hex Head - Sparkplugs.com Custom Spark Plug Socket Sparkplugs.com offers a custom spark plug socket, which has been machined 2.5mm thinner than a standard socket to allow proper tightening and removal of a non-OE (original equipment) spark plug. Better Performance and Mileage The reason the Denso iridium plugs improves both performance and mileage is their ultra-thin iridium center electrode. Iridium is 6 times harder and 8 times stronger than platinum; it also has a higher melting point and conducts electricity better then platinum. It is due to iridium's strength and hardness that Denso can create a long lasting ultra-thin (0.4mm) center electrode (as compared to the Champion RE14MCC5 with a 2.0mm center electrode and the platinum RE14PLP5 with a 1.1mm center electrode). Denso's smaller diameter center electrode and tapered cut ground allows your existing stock ignition system to produce a stronger, brighter spark. This results in a more efficient burning of the air fuel mixture, resulting in increased performance and mileage. More Tuning Options Racers and serious modifiers have also been hesitant to install some engine modifications on the Cruiser, due to the unavailability of a colder temperature spark plug. The Denso iridium now allows them a choice of heat ranges - up to four heat ranges colder than the stock Champion plugs. These include the ITV20, ITV22, ITV24, and an ITV27, each of which are progressively colder plugs for racing or seriously modified motors. Questions?
